Ko Phi Phi Le tours & experiences

Ko Phi Phi Le is the uninhabited postcard half of the Phi Phi archipelago — Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, and sheer limestone walls you reach only by boat. There are no hotels on Le itself: overnight on Phi Phi Don (Tonsai / Loh Dalum) or day-trip from Phuket or Krabi, then radiate out by longtail or speedboat. Protect early pier starts for Maya Bay’s visitor windows, and leave one soft Don beach day between big water circuits. Plan independent routes with best day trips from Ko Phi Phi Le or our 3-day, 5-day, and 7-day itineraries — each has a guided-tour companion.

Ko Phi Phi Le

Highlights

  • Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon as the clear headline stops on Le
  • Overnight on Phi Phi Don — Le is day-visit only
  • Longtail and speedboat logistics from Tonsai or mainland piers
  • Visitor caps and swimming rules that change — check before you book
  • Soft Don beach days between early boat alarms

When to go

November–April is the classic Andaman dry season for clearer water and more reliable open-sea crossings from Phuket and Krabi — also the busiest stretch for Maya Bay slots, especially December–January and Chinese New Year. May–October brings more rain and larger swells; ferry cancellations increase, but Phi Phi Don rates often soften and Le visits still run on calmer mornings.

Maya Bay access rules (viewing platforms, swimming bans, timed entries) have changed over the years — treat any listing that “guarantees” a beach walk as outdated until you read current park guidance. Build one weather-flex morning into every short stay.

  • Dry season: easiest ferry and snorkel conditions
  • Shoulder edges: fewer pier queues, still solid boat days
  • Wet season: free-cancellation boat bookings, softer Don hotels

Where to base yourself

Phi Phi Don is the overnight base. Tonsai Bay is the ferry hub with restaurants, dive shops, and longtail piers for Le; Loh Dalum faces the other side with sunset views and a more beach-club feel. Quieter beaches (Long Beach, Loh Bakao) suit travellers who want less nightlife noise after the boat day.

Day-tripping from Phuket (Rassada) or Krabi (Ao Nang / Klong Jilad) works for a single Le circuit but makes a multi-day Phi Phi plan miserable — you lose every evening on the islands. If you only have one full day, a mainland package is fine; for three or more days, sleep on Don. See also Phuket and Krabi for mainland-based alternatives.

  • Tonsai: ferry pier, longtails to Le, walkable food strip
  • Loh Dalum: sunset beach, lively evenings
  • Long Beach / quieter bays: calmer overnight base
  • Mainland day trip: only if you have a single Le day

Experiences worth booking

Maya Bay (viewpoint and/or beach access per current rules), Pileh Lagoon’s emerald cove, and Viking Cave’s clifftop nest sites are the Le trinity most boats hit. Bamboo Island and Mosquito Island add snorkel stops on longer circuits. From Don, a private longtail gives more control than a packed speedboat if seas are calm.

On Don itself, Loh Dalum sunset, a Viewpoint hike between Tonsai and Loh Dalum, and a dive or snorkel day fill the gaps. Prefer hotel pickup from the mainland? Compare Ko Phi Phi Le day trips with guided tours and the Phuket/Krabi day-trip guides.

  • Maya Bay + Pileh Lagoon boat circuit (Le headline)
  • Private longtail from Tonsai when seas are calm
  • Phi Phi Don Viewpoint and Loh Dalum sunset
  • Snorkel or dive day as a softer water alternative

Getting around & practical tips

There are no cars or scooters for tourists in any useful sense — Phi Phi is footpaths, longtails, and ferries. From the mainland, book ferries or speedboats to Tonsai; from Don to Le, hire a longtail or join a shared island circuit. Carry cash for boat fares; ATMs on Don can run dry in peak season.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag, water shoes, and a cover-up for sun on open boats. Drink bottled or filtered water. Respect park markers and do not climb closed areas for photos. Pack light — how to pack light for city breaks still applies with a swim kit added.

Frequently asked questions

Can you stay overnight on Ko Phi Phi Le?

No — Le is uninhabited for tourism stays. Sleep on Phi Phi Don (minutes by longtail) or day-trip from Phuket or Krabi. Multi-day itineraries in our guides use a Don base with Le as the boat-day focus.

How many days for Phi Phi?

One full day covers a Le circuit if you day-trip from the mainland. Three days on Don lets you do Le properly plus a soft beach day. Five to seven days adds snorkelling, a second boat loop, and weather buffer without living only on piers.

Is Maya Bay open for swimming?

Rules change. Some periods allow beach access with caps; others keep swimming restricted while viewpoints stay open. Confirm current park rules with your boat operator the day before — do not rely on old blog posts or movie scenes.
