3-day Ko Phi Phi Le self-drive itinerary

A Phi Phi Don-based independent break: ferry arrival, Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, then Don viewpoints or a snorkel flex.

Three days around Ko Phi Phi Le works only when you acknowledge the geography: sleep on Phi Phi Don, visit Le by boat, and call the plan independent rather than car-based. The three-day shape

• Day 1 — ferry to Phi Phi Don, settle around Tonsai and Loh Dalum
• Day 2 — early Ko Phi Phi Le circuit: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and Loh Samah
• Day 3 — Don Viewpoint and beach, or a second snorkel morning if weather was poor

Day 1 — arrive on Don softly

Take the ferry from Phuket or Krabi early enough to leave room for a delayed crossing and a walk after check-in. Tonsai is practical for ferries, food and longtails; Loh Dalum is easy for sunset; Long Beach is quieter but adds boat or walk logistics. Do not force Le onto arrival day. Instead, locate tomorrow’s pier, confirm Maya Bay rules with an operator and withdraw cash. Spend sunset at Loh Dalum, then sleep early for the first useful boat window.

Pack for the crossing rather than for a road trip: a small dry bag, water, sun protection, a light cover-up and footwear that can get wet are more useful than luggage you cannot easily carry along the pier. Tell your accommodation your expected ferry, but do not expect a missed connection to be solved by a car transfer. Once on Don, every practical move is walking or boat travel.

Day 2 — make Le the priority

Choose a shared boat for value or negotiate a private longtail for timing control. Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon deserve the longest allocation; Viking Cave is normally a short water-level viewing stop, while Loh Samah depends on tide and access. Ask exactly what park fee, snorkel gear and return time mean. Follow rangers’ beach markers and swimming restrictions rather than a photo itinerary. If wind moves the order, accept it; conditions decide whether the lagoon or an outer snorkel stop is sensible.

• Leave early enough to reach the first safe stop before peak boat traffic.
• Keep Maya Bay and Pileh as priorities; treat Viking Cave and Loh Samah as conditional extras.
• Carry cash for any fee not included, and confirm whether drinking water is supplied.
• Return before you are tired, sunburnt and dependent on the final boat of the day.

Maya Bay is protected national-park space, not a guaranteed swim stop. Access paths, beach use and swimming restrictions change, and rangers’ instructions override a listing or a skipper’s memory. That honesty is especially important on a three-day visit: a safe revised route is better than pressuring a crew into an unsuitable anchorage for a photograph.

Day 3 — Don viewpoint or snorkel flex

Walk to Phi Phi Don Viewpoint in the cooler morning for the twin-bay panorama, then swim or read at your chosen beach. If Day 2 lost Maya Bay or Pileh to weather, use this as the replacement boat morning instead and skip the hike. Bamboo Island or a Mosquito/Hin Klang snorkel loop is a better add-on than another rushed mainland crossing. Leave enough margin for your ferry off Don; boats and check-outs do not reward a last-minute schedule.

If the forecast is unsettled, decide at breakfast with a local operator rather than committing overnight to an open-water route. The viewpoint, a Long Beach swim and a slow lunch make a genuine Plan B; they are not consolation prizes. Book the ferry back to Phuket or Krabi with room for a delayed arrival, particularly if a flight or long-distance transfer follows.

Independent logistics without pretending this is self-drive

Book ferries from Phuket or Krabi in advance during high season, but buy weather-sensitive longtail time once on Don. Do not rent a scooter or car as the core transport strategy: paths are walked and Le is reached by water. Take reef-safe sunscreen, a cover-up, dry bag and cash.
