7-day Krabi self-drive itinerary

A flexible Ao Nang week with Railay, Four Islands, the jungle-and-temple circuit, Hong or Phi Phi, and mangroves.

7-day Krabi self-drive itinerary

A week in Krabi lets you see Railay, the islands and the inland jungle circuit without mistaking every morning for an airport transfer. Base in Ao Nang and use an independent schedule: Grab or songthaew locally, longtails for Railay, a private driver for Emerald Pool and Tiger Cave, and boats booked around the forecast. “Self-drive” does not require a car; scooters are only for experienced riders, while a hire car makes sense only for confident drivers considering a Koh Lanta extension. For hotel pickups and booked boats, switch to the 7-day Krabi guided itinerary.

The week at a glance

  • Day 1 — Ao Nang soft landing
  • Day 2 — Railay, Phra Nang and optional Tonsai
  • Day 3 — Four Islands
  • Day 4 — Emerald Pool, Hot Springs and Tiger Cave
  • Day 5 — Hong Island OR Phi Phi
  • Day 6 — Ao Thalane kayaking OR a Koh Lanta flex day
  • Day 7 — Cooking class, spa and farewell sunset

Days 1–2 — Ao Nang and Railay

Arrive without scheduling a major experience, then use the first full day for Railay by shared longtail. West Railay, Phra Nang Cave Beach and the limestone cliffs deserve an unrushed swim-and-walk day. Ao Nang is the better base for this itinerary because restaurants, operators and boats are together; Railay is gorgeous but boat-only, so it complicates every inland and island departure.

Day 3 — Four Islands at the right pace

Use an early shared or private longtail for Chicken Island, Poda, Tup and Moh. Ask about tide before expecting the Tup sandbar, take cash for park fees, and avoid making this your first day after a long-haul arrival. Private boats buy timing freedom; shared boats are cheaper and still fine if you accept their lunch and return schedule.

Day 4 — Break the boat rhythm with a land circuit

A private day-driver is the comfortable choice for Emerald Pool, Hot Springs, Blue Pool if open, and Tiger Cave Temple. Start at Emerald Pool, carry a cover-up for the temple, and respect Tiger Cave’s long steep stair climb. This is not a place to prove you can drive tropical roads: Grab is limited at the far stops and a driver means everyone can rest on the way back.

Day 5 — Hong Island or Phi Phi, not both

Hong Island is a calmer Krabi-oriented choice, with its lagoon, viewpoint and manageable island day. Phi Phi is the headline alternative if Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon matter more, but it means a longer speedboat day and earlier start. Check swell and park rules, choose one, and protect the next morning from another forced alarm.

Day 6 — Mangroves or a realistic Koh Lanta flex

Ao Thalane mangrove kayaking is the better day-trip choice for most: gentle channels, limestone and a lower-energy pace. Koh Lanta is possible only as an ambitious early start, ideally with a confident driver and an understanding that ferry queues can absorb the day. It is often better as a separate overnight than a rushed tick; use it as a weather and energy flex, not a requirement.

Day 7 — Make the final day soft

Take a cooking class, book a massage or spa, visit Krabi Town and Khao Khanab Nam, then finish at Tubkaek or Noppharat Thara for sunset. This open slot is insurance: if an island day was cancelled, move it here; if all boats ran, enjoy not having to repack or rush.

What to book and what to leave open

Book accommodation, a private driver, and one priority island boat early in dry season. Keep the second island day and day 6 flexible until the weather picture is clear. This approach is more honest than a rigid self-drive loop: Krabi’s best transport is by water, and sea conditions should decide the order. For compact versions, use the 3-day or 5-day self-drive plans.
