3-day Krabi self-drive itinerary

An independent Ao Nang itinerary: Railay by longtail, then Four Islands or Hong Island, with honest no-car logistics.

Three days in Krabi works from one Ao Nang base: a soft beach arrival, Railay by longtail, then one headline island day. “Self-drive” means independently paced, not that you need a rental car — use Grab, songthaews and longtails, and only rent a scooter if you are already an experienced rider. Why Ao Nang is the right short-stay base

Ao Nang is not the prettiest beach in the province, but it makes a short trip work: longtails leave for Railay, tour desks sell shared boats, and food, ATMs and Grab are close together. Railay makes a beautiful overnight alternative but is boat-only, so moving there costs you flexibility. Book one hotel and radiate out; do not spend a third of a three-day trip changing bases.

• Day 3 — Four Islands OR Hong Island, chosen by forecast and energy

Day 1 — Soft landing around Ao Nang

Keep arrival day local. Walk Ao Nang beach and the pier area to understand tomorrow’s longtail system, then take a short Grab to Noppharat Thara for a quieter low-tide beach walk, or arrange a driver to Tubkaek for a more dramatic sunset. Use the evening to buy a dry bag, withdraw cash, and confirm your Railay and day-three boat plans. A sunset cruise is pleasant if you arrive early, but do not schedule it tightly after a flight.

• Keep dinner near your hotel; Ao Nang traffic and rain are poor reasons to over-plan

Day 2 — Railay Beach at your own pace

Take an early shared longtail to West Railay, then walk across the narrow peninsula to Phra Nang Cave Beach. Pause for a swim and the limestone views, and continue toward Tonsai only if the tide, footwear and confidence suit the path. Railay is best when you leave space to linger: eat lunch on the peninsula, watch climbers, and choose a late-afternoon return rather than joining the first boat back. Carry cash, water and sandals that can get wet getting in and out of the longtail.

Day 3 — Four Islands or Hong Island

For the classic first-timer route, choose Four Islands: Chicken Island, Poda, Tup and Moh pack beaches and snorkel stops into a manageable day. Hong Island is the better choice if you prefer a larger lagoon, viewpoint and one more spacious island, but the crossing is longer. Both can be booked independently through a trusted Ao Nang operator; ask about park fees, lunch, snorkel equipment and return time. Do not force a Phi Phi day into this itinerary — it is long enough to deserve its own morning-to-night commitment.

Independent logistics without pretending Krabi is a car trip

Grab handles airport, town and local beach movement. Songthaews are cheap but slow and irregular; longtails are transport, not a novelty, for Railay. Do not make a scooter your first-ever riding experience on holiday: rain, sand and unfamiliar traffic ruin the calculation. A hire car is unnecessary for this three-day plan; save it, if at all, for a confident-driver Emerald Pool or Koh Lanta extension.

Make it guided or make it longer
