Best day trips from Hoi An: 10 things to do

Hoi An is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, which is exactly why people build day trips around it rather than staying put for a week. The ancient town holds your attention for a day or two, and then the surrounding rice paddies, ruins, and beaches take over.

Bicycles do a lot of work here. Several of these trips are genuinely reachable by pedal power from the old town, which changes the character of the day compared with a car-based excursion.

1. My Son Sanctuary

Fourth-to-thirteenth-century Cham temple ruins set in a jungle valley, about an hour from Hoi An by road. Less polished than some Southeast Asian ruin sites, which is part of the appeal — moss-covered brick towers, quiet forest, and fewer crowds if you arrive early. Some tours combine the drive with a return boat trip along the Thu Bon River.

2. Marble Mountains and Da Nang

The marble and limestone hills sit roughly midway between Hoi An and Da Nang, making them an easy stop on a day that also covers Da Nang’s beaches or Son Tra Peninsula. 3. An Bang beach day

Hoi An’s beach, a short bicycle ride or ten-minute taxi from the old town. Beach clubs line the shore with loungers and simple seafood menus, and the water is calmer than Da Nang’s more exposed stretches. A legitimate full or half-day without leaving the area at all — useful as a lower-effort day between busier excursions.

4. Cam Thanh coconut boat village

A short trip through the coconut palm forests just outside town, where round basket boats spin visitors through narrow water channels — usually with a fishing demonstration and sometimes a basket-boat “dance” performance thrown in. Touristy, but genuinely fun, and easily combined with a bike ride through the surrounding rice fields. Best done in the morning or late afternoon when the light is better for photos.

5. Hue day trip

A longer day, roughly two and a half hours each way, but the Imperial City and royal tombs justify it if you are not planning to stay overnight in Hue itself. 6. Cham Islands boat trip

Snorkeling and quiet beaches on a small marine-protected archipelago, reached by boat from the Cua Dai area just outside town. The crossing depends on sea conditions, so trips mainly run from around March to September — check ahead if you are visiting outside that window, since rough seas can cancel departures with little notice.

7. Tra Que vegetable village

A small organic farming village a short bike ride from the old town, where local farmers grow the herbs that flavor much of Hoi An’s food. Hands-on visits let you plant, water, and harvest alongside farmers, often paired with a simple farm-to-table lunch. A relaxed half-day that works well combined with the coconut village since both sit on the same side of town.

8. Countryside cycling loop

Rather than a single destination, this is a day built around the bicycle itself: rice paddies, water buffalo, small family shrines, and river villages within a few kilometers of the old town. Rent a bike for the day or join a guided cycling tour if you want route knowledge and a translator for chance encounters with farmers. One of the better low-cost, low-planning days on this list.

9. Ba Na Hills (optional, via Da Nang)

The Golden Bridge and hilltop cable car resort sit closer to Da Nang than Hoi An, so this is a longer day from here — expect over an hour each way. Worth it if you have not already been through Da Nang, but not the most efficient use of a Hoi An-based day if time is tight.

10. Cooking class day

Hoi An has one of the strongest cooking-class scenes in the country, and it is a full day well spent without leaving town: a market walk, sometimes a boat ride to a herb village, then a hands-on class covering regional dishes like cao lau and banh xeo. A good choice for a rest day that still feels productive.

Want ruins and history: My Son in the morning, back for lunch. Want water and greenery close by: the coconut village and Tra Que combined into one relaxed day. Have an extra day to spare: Hue, given the distance. Just want a beach day: An Bang, full stop.

Practical tips

Bicycles are cheap to rent and genuinely practical for An Bang beach, Cam Thanh, and Tra Que — all sit within easy pedaling distance of the old town. For My Son or Hue, a private car or an organized tour saves the hassle of navigating unfamiliar roads.
