3 days in Vietnam with guided tours

Three days is a stopover, not a country tour, so this plan keeps everything anchored on Hanoi and books the two headline day trips as packages rather than trying to self-navigate ferries and karst boats on a tight clock. Day one stays in the Old Quarter on foot; day two is the Halong Bay cruise almost everyone flies to Vietnam for; day three is a choice between limestone countryside at Ninh Binh or a slower cooking-class morning before you fly out. Day 1 — Hanoi Old Quarter and street food

Arrival day should stay light and walkable. The Old Quarter’s 36 streets are dense with pho stalls, egg coffee shops, and Hoan Kiem Lake loops, and none of it needs a booking. Walk the lake in the morning before scooter traffic and heat peak, duck into the Temple of Literature or a museum if you want one indoor block, then book an evening food tour rather than guessing at stalls with a language barrier and no context on what is actually good. Day 2 — Halong Bay day cruise

This is the day the whole trip is built around. A Halong Bay day cruise from Hanoi means roughly four hours of driving each way and three to four hours actually among the limestone karsts — a rough ratio, but still the single most photographed landscape in the country and worth the early departure. Packages typically include hotel pickup, lunch on board, and a cave or kayak stop; confirm which before booking so you are not surprised by extras. If your dates genuinely allow one more night, swap this for an overnight junk cruise instead — waking up on the water is a different trip entirely, and it is the one upgrade this itinerary would make first if it had a fourth day to spend.

Day 3 — Ninh Binh countryside, or a cooking class, then depart

Split this day by flight time. If you leave in the evening, book a Ninh Binh day tour — Tam Coc’s rowboats threading between rice paddies and limestone peaks, Trang An’s cave-tunnel boat ride, or the Mua Cave viewpoint if you are willing to climb for the aerial shot. It is often called “Halong Bay on land,” and for a single day it is arguably the better ratio of scenery to driving at only about two hours from Hanoi each way. If your flight is early afternoon instead, skip the two-hour transfer and book a Hanoi cooking class or market tour in the morning — you get a hands-on souvenir experience without the road time, then head straight to the airport.

Guided packages vs a hire car

Three days is short enough that guided packages usually win outright: Halong Bay cannot be reached without a boat regardless of transport choice, and a car does not save meaningful time on the Ninh Binh transfer once you factor in Hanoi traffic getting out of the city. Choose this guided plan if you want hotel pickup handled and zero navigation stress on a short trip. • Best window: October–March for cooler, drier days and calmer Halong Bay seas
• Book Halong and Ninh Binh a few days ahead in peak season — boats and vans sell out on weekends
• Use Grab for anything beyond Old Quarter walking distance; do not try to drive yourself in Hanoi traffic
• Carry small-denomination cash for street stalls and rural stops outside the city
