Day 1 — Hanoi Old Quarter

Day 2 — Overnight Halong Bay cruise

Book a cabin with a window if you can — the difference in how the bay feels at dawn is worth the small upgrade. Confirm the return time carefully, since day three has a flight to catch; most overnight cruises are built around a mid-morning return specifically for this reason.

Check into your Hoi An base, then use whatever daylight is left for a first lantern-lit walk through the Ancient Town rather than saving all of it for tomorrow.

Hoi An has one of the strongest cooking-class scenes in the country — a market walk, often a boat ride to a herb village, then a hands-on class covering dishes like cao lau and banh xeo makes for a full, satisfying day that does not feel like sightseeing fatigue. If cooking is not your thing, swap it for a guided food tour instead; either way, keep the evening free for the lanterns to come on properly at dusk.

Day 5 — My Son, Marble Mountains, or the beach — then depart

Pick one half-day based on your flight time and energy. Marble Mountains sit roughly midway between Hoi An and Da Nang and pair naturally with a drop-off at the airport afterward. If ruins and caves are not the priority, An Bang Beach is a legitimate half-day of doing nothing, a short ride from the Ancient Town. Whichever you choose, build a comfortable buffer before your Da Nang departure — this corridor’s traffic is manageable but not instant.
