Winter days are shorter and mountain weather is less forgiving, but crowds thin out and MONA still works rain or shine. Summer brings longer evenings for Salamanca and later returns from Bruny. Either season can be excellent if you match the day trip to the daylight you actually have.

1. Port Arthur Historic Site

2. Bruny Island

Ferry from Kettering, then cheese, oysters, coastal walks, and a slower clock. Food stops are half the point. Book ferry slots in peak season. A tour removes the stress of timing the boat both ways.

3. MONA

Ferry from the waterfront if you can. The ride is part of the day. Budget at least three hours inside. Contemporary art, underground galleries, and a site that feels nothing like a standard regional museum. Easy without a car.

4. kunanyi / Mount Wellington

The mountain behind Hobart. Summit lookouts on a clear day stretch across the harbour and far beyond. Weather changes fast. Dress warmer than you think. Organised tours help if you would rather not drive the mountain road in cloud.

5. Richmond

Historic village and Australia’s oldest bridge still in use, about twenty-five minutes from Hobart. Easy half day, or a stop on the way toward Port Arthur. Cafés and a calm main street. Good with kids or anyone who wants heritage without a full penal-settlement day.

6. Huon Valley

South of Hobart through apple country, cideries, and river towns. Tahune Airwalk is a common add-on further into the valley. A scenic driving day more than a single ticketed attraction. Take it slowly.

7. Mount Field National Park

Waterfalls and short rainforest walks west of Hobart. Russell Falls is the famous easy walk. Longer tracks exist if you have the legs. A strong nature day when Bruny ferries are fully booked.

8. Freycinet and Wineglass Bay (long day)

Beautiful, and a stretch as a day trip from Hobart. The drive is long for a return the same evening. Better as an overnight on a 7-day Tasmania road trip. Day tours exist for people with only one free day and a strong wish to see Wineglass Bay.

9. Salamanca and Battery Point (city day)

Stay local on purpose. Saturday Salamanca Market is the big morning. Battery Point lanes and the waterfront fill the rest. Useful between two heavy tour days, or on arrival when you do not want a long drive.

10. Bonorong or closer wildlife parks

Wildlife parks near Hobart for Tasmanian devils and other native animals. A half day that pairs with Richmond or a short Huon loop. Handy if overnight wildlife tours are not in the budget.

How to choose

Practical tips

Bruny and Port Arthur both deserve full days. Stacking them back to back is fine if you are used to early starts. Pairing either with a heavy kunanyi morning usually feels like too much. MONA is the easiest no-car highlight and works well on arrival day.

Weather on kunanyi can close roads or wipe the view. Have Richmond or Salamanca as a backup. In winter, daylight is shorter than mainland visitors sometimes expect, so long Freycinet day returns get darker than the map suggests.
