Australia packing list for first-time visitors

What to pack for tropical north, temperate cities, and a Tasmanian winter — plus the sun and road-trip extras people forget.

The trap most first-time visitors fall into is packing for "Australia" as if it were one climate. It is not. A trip that starts in tropical Cairns and ends in Hobart can span a 20-degree temperature swing and completely different rainfall patterns, sometimes in the same week. Sun protection is not optional here

Australia has some of the highest UV exposure in the world, and it catches visitors out even on cloudy or cool days.
