7-day Sydney to Gold Coast round trip via Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay and Port Macquarie
A relaxed 1,800 km Pacific Highway loop with three nights on the Gold Coast — daily drives, costs, free stops, and a different route home.
This seven-day Sydney to Gold Coast round trip drives the Pacific Highway north through Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay, spends three relaxed nights on the Gold Coast, then loops back south via Lennox Head, Port Macquarie and Forster. It covers roughly 1,800 km, and the trick is that the two legs use different stops — so you never feel like you are retracing the same road. If you only want the one-way drive to Brisbane, see the Sydney to Brisbane road trip.

Why this route works
Byron Bay is a daytime stop rather than an extra hotel move, which saves a check-in on day three. The Gold Coast gets three consecutive nights in one hotel, so the middle of the trip is unpacked and easy. And because the northbound and southbound legs visit different towns, the long highway days always end somewhere new. For a wider view of the same coastline, compare Gold Coast vs Sunshine Coast.

Day 1 — Sydney to Newcastle
Leave Sydney around 8:00 am for the 2.5-hour drive to Newcastle and start at Fort Scratchley in Newcastle East, a historic coastal fort overlooking the harbour and Nobbys Beach. The fort is free to explore; the optional guided tunnel tour takes about 90 minutes in total. Have lunch around Newcastle East, then spend the afternoon on the coast.
- Fort Scratchley — free entry; tunnel tour $16.50 adult, $9.50 child (4–14), $11 concession, $42 family (2 adults + 2 children). Hours noted: Wednesday–Monday, 10:00 am–4:00 pm, closed Tuesdays. Groups under 12 buy tunnel tickets at the fort shop. Fort Scratchley tours
- Coastal sequence, 2:00–5:00 pm — Nobbys Beach, Newcastle Beach, Newcastle Memorial Walk, Bar Beach, Merewether Beach
- Newcastle Memorial Walk is a short, free cliff-top walk that links into the longer Bathers Way. Memorial Walk info
- Stay: Rydges Newcastle on the Honeysuckle waterfront is close to the CBD, harbour and restaurants
Day 2 — Newcastle to Coffs Harbour
This is one of the longer highway sections at 4–4.5 hours, so take a coffee and stretch break around Nabiac, Taree or Port Macquarie. Aim to reach Coffs Harbour in time for a lunch stop at the Big Banana, then work through the town’s free lookouts and coastal walks before the light fades.
- 12:30 pm, Big Banana — general entry and the photo are free; allow 45–60 minutes unless you want the rides (Ultimate Pass $89 adult 14+, $79 child under 14). Big Banana tickets
- 2:00 pm, Niigi Niigi / Sealy Lookout — the Forest Sky Pier gives panoramic coast views; allow 45–60 minutes, free. Sealy Lookout info
- 3:30 pm, Coffs Harbour Jetty precinct and marina
- 4:30–6:00 pm, Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve — a free walk from the marina with coastal views and, in season, whale watching. Muttonbird Island info
- Stay: Pacific Marina Apartments in the Jetty precinct, with secure undercover parking and restaurants nearby
Day 3 — Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay to the Gold Coast
Depart around 8:00 am and treat Byron Bay as a proper four-hour sightseeing stop (about 11:00 am–3:00 pm) rather than adding another overnight. If you are comfortable with a decent walk, do the Walgun Cape Byron track — the full loop is about 3.7 km and takes 1–3 hours — taking in The Pass, Wategos Beach, Cape Byron Lighthouse and the coastal viewpoints. Have lunch in Byron before continuing north.
Leave Byron around 3:00–3:30 pm; the Gold Coast is a further 1–1.5 hours. Check in, take an easy beach walk and have dinner around Broadbeach. Broadbeach is the recommended base for all three Gold Coast nights — Dorsett Gold Coast in The Star precinct is a practical option, close to restaurants, Pacific Fair and the beach. Book it for days 3, 4 and 5.
Day 4 — Currumbin, Burleigh Heads and SkyPoint
A local-driving day built around one big paid attraction and two free coastal stops. Be at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for opening time and allow roughly four hours for native wildlife, presentations and keeper talks. For more ideas beyond the theme parks, see Gold Coast beyond the theme parks.

Day 5 — Springbrook and Natural Bridge
Swap the coast for rainforest. The Springbrook roads are sealed but can be steep, narrow and winding, so drive conservatively and leave extra time in wet or foggy weather. Have lunch on the plateau rather than dropping back to the coast between stops, and keep a light layer in the car — it can be noticeably cooler up top. Allow 2–3 hours of driving in total.
- 9:00 am, Best of All Lookout — a short 600 m return walk; free
- 10:00 am, Purling Brook Falls — the 4 km circuit takes about two hours if conditions are good; free
- 12:30 pm, lunch on the Springbrook plateau
- 2:00 pm, Natural Bridge — a 1 km return rainforest circuit to the rock arch and waterfall, about an hour; free. Springbrook walks
- From 4:00 pm, back to Broadbeach for a relaxed final Gold Coast dinner
Day 6 — Gold Coast to Lennox Head to Port Macquarie
Depart around 8:00 am for about 5.5–6 hours of driving. If NSW daylight saving is in effect, you lose the hour you gained crossing into Queensland. The first break is Lennox Head, around 10:30 am NSW time.
- Pat Morton Lookout — panoramic views over Lennox Point and Seven Mile Beach; free. Pat Morton Lookout info
- 11:00 am, coastal walk towards Lennox village or part of the cliff-top walk towards Boulder Beach
- 12:00 pm, lunch in Lennox Head — aim to be back on the highway by 12:45–1:00 pm
- Around 5:00 pm, check in at Port Macquarie, then head to Tacking Point Lighthouse for evening coastal views; free. Tacking Point info
- Stay: Mantra The Observatory, opposite Town Beach, with secure undercover parking
Day 7 — Port Macquarie to Forster to Sydney
About five hours of driving in total, plus sightseeing. Start at Sea Acres National Park at 9:00 am, then leave Port Macquarie around 10:15 am for lunch at Forster. Optionally continue into Booti Booti National Park for Cape Hawke Lookout, then leave Forster around 2:00 pm — a realistic arrival in Sydney is 5:30–6:00 pm depending on traffic and stops. For more things to do on the way home, see best day trips from Sydney.
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult | $9 |
| School-age child | $5 |
| Senior / pensioner | $7 |
| Family (2 adults + 3 children) | $20 |

- Forster — lunch and a short waterfront stop around midday
- Optional: Cape Hawke Lookout — about 500 m with roughly 420 steps; Booti Booti National Park entry $8 per vehicle per day. Cape Hawke info

Budget: what the paid sights cost
Most of this trip is free — beaches, lookouts, national park walks and the Big Banana photo stop. If you do Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, SkyPoint (fixed-date) and Sea Acres, the core paid sightseeing comes to about $112 per adult. Add the Fort Scratchley tunnel tour, Byron parking, Booti Booti entry and any Big Banana rides, and a practical sightseeing budget is about $130–$150 per adult — excluding accommodation, fuel, meals and optional amusement-park activities.
| Attraction | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fort Scratchley tunnel tour | $16.50 adult | Optional |
| Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary | $70 adult | Book ahead |
| SkyPoint Observation Deck | From $33 | Fixed-date ticket |
| Sea Acres Rainforest Boardwalk | $9 adult | Pay at visitor centre |
| Cape Hawke / Booti Booti NP | $8 per vehicle | Optional stop |
