Reserve an Acropolis guided tour first — it’s the single most in-demand product in Athens and its best morning slots sell out weeks ahead in summer even on guided packages. Add a museum or walking tour next, then a food tour, then Cape Sounion, then Delphi, then Mycenae and Nafplio. Leave one afternoon unbooked for jet lag, heat, or a plain Plaka wander. Two long coach days back to back will sour the week — separate Delphi and the Mycenae/Nafplio day with a soft city day if your schedule allows.

Day 1 — Arrive and a guided Acropolis tour

Check in near a Metro line and keep expectations light if you’ve just landed, then head into the trip’s anchor: a guided Acropolis tour. Day 3 — Free and soft, then a guided food tour

No major sight today. Wander Plaka and Monastiraki at your own pace in the morning — Anafiotika’s whitewashed Cycladic-style lanes are a good, low-effort stop — then join a guided food tour in the afternoon or evening: souvlaki and gyro stalls locals actually queue at, a stop through the Central Market’s meat and fish halls, and tastings of loukoumades or spoon sweets that are easy to miss on your own. A deliberate gap between two history-heavy days and the countryside trips ahead.

Day 4 — Cape Sounion sunset

A Cape Sounion sunset tour handles the roughly ninety-minute drive southeast along the Athens Riviera coastline to the fifth-century-BC Temple of Poseidon, perched dramatically above the Aegean, where Lord Byron reportedly carved his name into a column. Sunset light on the surviving columns is one of the best closing images a Greece trip can offer, and the tour handles the coastal traffic and return transport so you don’t have to watch a bus timetable.

Day 5 — Delphi

A full-day Delphi tour handles the roughly three-hour drive to the Sanctuary of Apollo on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, once considered the centre of the ancient world and home to the legendary Oracle. A guide’s history brings the site’s temples, the ancient theatre and stadium, and the museum’s bronze Charioteer of Delphi together far more coherently than a self-paced visit, and a coach beats the long, winding mountain drive on your own.

Day 6 — Mycenae and Nafplio

A full-day Mycenae and Nafplio tour covers the Lion Gate and the beehive Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae — the legendary seat of Agamemnon — followed by a stop in Nafplio, a graceful seaside town with a Venetian old town and the Palamidi fortress towering above the harbour. Most itineraries also add the acoustically famous ancient theatre at Epidaurus, and a coach handles what would otherwise be an awkward day of connecting buses and taxis between the three sites.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Pick a base in Koukaki, on the Plaka edge, or in Monastiraki rather than a cheap hotel far from a Metro line. All three keep evening walks short after long tour days and sit close to the pickup points most operators use. Tickets, timing, and heat

The Acropolis and Cape Sounion both crowd and heat up fastest in summer — book early morning or late afternoon slots before you fly. Pack layers and sun protection regardless of season; Delphi and the Mycenae/Nafplio route both involve outdoor walking with little shelter. Countryside tours can adjust departure times around weather, so confirm pickup time the night before.
