Five days gives Phuket room to breathe from a single Kata or Karon base: a soft arrival, a full land day (Big Buddha, Old Town, Wat Chalong), a quieter beach-and-Promthep day, one big island excursion (Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay), and a soft cooking-class or spa finale. This independent plan uses Grab and hired day-drivers throughout — “self-drive” means DIY pacing on your own schedule, not a self-navigated rental car, since Phuket’s traffic and hill roads make driving yourself more hassle than it is worth for most visitors. Why one base works for five days

Unlike a multi-city Thailand trip, Phuket rewards staying in a single west-coast base rather than relocating — Kata or Karon sit centrally enough to reach Chalong Pier, Big Buddha, and Promthep Cape without long transfers, and one hotel means less packing and unpacking over five days. Book a private driver for the land day and Grab for shorter local hops; boat days need their own ticket booked directly with a pier operator rather than a land-tour driver. Leave the Phi Phi-or-Phang-Nga choice until you have checked the weather forecast a couple of days out.

Day 1 — Arrive and settle on the coast

Check into Kata or Karon, walk the beach for a first sunset, and keep the evening close to home. Confirm tomorrow’s driver pickup for the land circuit before you sleep — a mid-morning departure gives Big Buddha time to clear its own crowds first.

Day 2 — Big Buddha, Old Town, and Wat Chalong

Your driver runs you to the 45-metre marble Big Buddha first (dress with shoulders and knees covered), then Wat Chalong — Phuket’s most important temple, easy to fold into the same loop — before finishing in Phuket Old Town for a café-and-shophouse afternoon along Thalang Road. This is your most complete land day; keep the evening low-key so you are fresh for tomorrow’s beach reset.

• Big Buddha: bring a scarf if your outfit does not already cover shoulders and knees
• Wat Chalong: a quick 20–30 minute stop is enough for most visitors
• Old Town: linger for lunch and a coffee rather than rushing through

Day 3 — Beach day and Promthep Cape sunset

Protect one full day for the beach — Kata Noi or Karon’s quieter southern stretch both work well — before an easy Grab ride down to Promthep Cape for sunset. Arrive at least 45 minutes ahead of golden hour; this free viewpoint at Phuket’s southern tip is genuinely one of the best sunsets in Thailand, and the small car park fills fast on clear evenings. Rawai and Nai Harn beaches sit nearby if you want a quieter swim stop on the way.

Day 4 — Phi Phi Islands OR Phang Nga Bay (choose one)

Phi Phi route: a roughly 1.5–2 hour speedboat from Rassada or Chalong Pier reaches Maya Bay’s viewing platform, Pileh Lagoon, and a lunch stop on Phi Phi Don — book your own ticket directly and expect an early 7:30–8:30am departure. Phang Nga route: a shorter drive north (1–1.5 hours) reaches the boat launch for James Bond Island, sea-canoeing through hidden lagoons, and the stilted village of Koh Panyi — a calmer, more scenery-led day than Phi Phi’s bigger crowds. Choose whichever suits your energy and the weather forecast; do not attempt both on a five-day trip.

Day 5 — Soft finale before departure

Protect the last day from another early start. A Thai cooking class near your base, a spa treatment (excellent value by Australian standards), or a slow morning on Kata or Karon beach all work well after a heavy day 4. If your flight is in the evening, a short Grab ride to Old Town for a final coffee and some last-minute shopping rounds out the trip nicely.

Independent Grab-and-driver days cost less and let you linger longer at any single stop.
