3-day Megève winter itinerary
Three Christmas-season days in Megève: village sleighs, Mont d’Arbois skiing and a day trip toward Mont Blanc or Annecy.
Megève is the Alps’ most refined village-style ski resort: a car-free stone-and-timber centre, horse-drawn sleighs, and long views of Mont Blanc from the slopes above. It is one of the picks in our trending Christmas destinations for 2026. Three days gives you a good first taste: a day in the village, a day skiing or walking on Mont d’Arbois and Rochebrune, and a day trip toward Chamonix, Saint-Gervais or Annecy. For a longer plan, see the 5-day Megève winter itinerary.
Getting there and where to stay
Geneva is the easiest airport, about 1 hour 15 minutes by road via the A40 motorway, with many shared and private transfers. By train, TGV and regional services run to Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet or Sallanches-Combloux-Megève, with onward bus or taxi to the resort. A hire car gives flexibility for a day trip to Chamonix or Annecy but is not needed in Megève itself, where the centre is largely pedestrianised and the village has paid car parks.
- Winter equipment: since the French mountain law, vehicles in Haute-Savoie and other designated mountain departments must carry chains or use winter tyres during the winter period, so check the current rules before you drive
- Parking: use car parks near the centre; plan for fees and busy holidays
- Where to stay: the village centre is atmospheric and walkable; Mont d’Arbois and Rochebrune have ski-in options
- Transfers: pre-book Geneva shuttles in Christmas week, as they sell out
Day 1: Village, church and a sleigh ride
Begin in the centre around the Place de l’Église, with the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the old stone fountains. Megève’s main streets are lined with boutiques, patisseries and chalet-style restaurants. Horse-drawn sleigh rides and carriage tours are a traditional Megève activity during the winter season; check the current operators and prices at the tourist office. Late afternoon is a good time to try the ice rink at the Palais des Sports if it is open, or to browse the Christmas lights.
- Morning: wander the centre, church and fountains
- Midday: lunch in a village restaurant; tartiflette and raclette are local classics
- Afternoon: horse-drawn sleigh ride or ice skating
- Evening: dinner in the centre, then a lit-up stroll
Day 2: Mont d’Arbois and Rochebrune
Take the Mont d’Arbois gondola from the edge of the village to the top of the ski area for sweeping views of the Mont Blanc massif. Mont d’Arbois has a wide range of runs, well suited to intermediates. Rochebrune and Côte 2000 offer sunny slopes and links toward Saint-Gervais, and form part of the wider Évasion Mont-Blanc area. Non-skiers can ride the lifts for views and walk on the marked winter paths, or sit on a terrace and watch the skiers.
- Morning: Mont d’Arbois lift, gentle runs and views
- Midday: mountain restaurant lunch, booking ahead in Christmas week
- Afternoon: Rochebrune slopes or a winter walk
- Evening: spa or relaxed dinner
Day 3: Chamonix, Saint-Gervais or Annecy
Pick one day trip. Chamonix is roughly an hour away and is the base for the Aiguille du Midi cable car, which depends on weather and needs booking ahead. Saint-Gervais is closer and has a thermal spa and the start of the Mont Blanc tramway; check winter operations. Annecy, about an hour away, has a pretty old town and a Christmas atmosphere. If conditions are poor, a spa day in Megève is a good fallback.
If you ski
Megève’s slopes are part of the Évasion Mont-Blanc area, shared with Combloux, Saint-Gervais, Les Contamines-Montjoie and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce. Much of the terrain suits beginners and intermediates, with tree-lined runs that keep visibility reasonable in poor weather. Ski schools and rental shops are plentiful in the village, but the Christmas weeks book out, so reserve lessons in advance. Non-skiers still have plenty to do: marked winter walking routes, snowshoeing outings with local guides, and the spas in many hotels.

| Day 1 | Village | Church square, boutiques, sleigh ride |

Practical tips for Christmas week
- Book accommodation, lift passes and restaurants early; Megève is one of the busiest French resorts at Christmas
- Layers, waterproof boots, a hat, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential
- Check lift status and road conditions; snow and wind can affect mountain roads
- Many shops and restaurants close on 25 December; reserve Christmas Eve dinner
- Consider a multi-day pass for Évasion Mont-Blanc if you plan to ski; compare prices online
- Consider a train and transfer plan rather than driving, especially on busy changeover days
Final thoughts
Megève rewards a slow pace: a day of village charm, a day on the mountain and a day trip. A car is helpful for the excursion, but the resort works well on foot and with lifts.
