An independent three-day Florence plan on foot — Duomo axis, Uffizi, Accademia, and Oltrarno — without a city hire car.

3-day Florence self-drive itinerary

Why go independent (and skip a city hire car)

Florence's historic centre is a camera-enforced Limited Traffic Zone — fines arrive by post if you drift into the wrong lane near the Duomo or Ponte Vecchio. A hire car costs more in stress than it saves. Walk clusters between piazzas and use buses for Piazzale Michelangelo hills. Save regional trains for Pisa, Lucca, or Siena — covered in best day trips from Florence.

  • Buy a Firenze Card only if museum math works for your dates — otherwise book timed tickets à la carte
  • Book Uffizi and Accademia timed entry before you fly in peak months
  • Confirm Monday closures — some museums and sites shut
  • Travel light for walk-up apartments — see how to pack light for city breaks

Florence rewards slow blocks in two neighbourhoods a day. Never stack Uffizi and Accademia on the same morning — both are ticketed marathons. Shoulder months (shoulder-season travel wins) soften crowds and June–August heat that makes Signoria afternoons brutal.

  • Base inside or just outside walking radius of the Duomo rather than a cheap hotel beyond the ring road
  • Hydrate — carry a refill bottle between gelato stops
  • Plan one long lunch daily — rushing trattorie is how people hate Florence
  • Keep shoulders and knees covered for basilica entries

Where to stay for this itinerary

Base near the historic centre, Santa Croce, or Oltrarno rather than a bargain hotel far from Santa Maria Novella. Oltrarno and Santa Croce keep cobbled evenings walkable. Quiet courtyards beat busy Via Nazionale if you are a light sleeper after long gallery days.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1 — Duomo exteriors, Signoria, Ponte Vecchio; Oltrarno evening
  • Day 2 — Uffizi morning; Boboli or Piazzale Michelangelo afternoon
  • Day 3 — Accademia; San Lorenzo / Mercato Centrale; Santa Croce

Day 1 — Centro and Oltrarno

Start with Duomo exteriors and baptistery views before tour groups peak, then Piazza della Signoria and a slow walk across Ponte Vecchio. Do not add the Uffizi the same day if your legs already feel cobbles. Evening: cross to Santo Spirito for aperitivo and a long dinner away from the bridge crowds.

  • Book any Duomo dome climb separately if that is your priority
  • Wear broken-in shoes — stone streets punish blisters
  • Golden-hour Arno photos beat harsh midday glare

Day 2 — Uffizi and views

Uffizi at the earliest slot you can buy, then a softer afternoon: Boboli Gardens if heat allows, or bus up to Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato for city views. Keep shoulders covered if you enter the church. Treat the evening as recovery before Accademia day 3.

  • No Accademia stacking — gallery legs need recovery
  • Boboli closes earlier than many expect — check seasonal hours
  • Sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo is popular — arrive early for railing space

Day 3 — Accademia and markets

Accademia timed entry for David, then Mercato Centrale upstairs for a practical lunch and San Lorenzo browsing. Afternoon: Santa Croce basilica and quieter eastern lanes. Optional: swap this day for DIY Pisa (regional train from SMN) if days 1–2 already felt complete and heat allows.

  • Accademia for sculpture focus; skip if David is not a priority
  • Santa Croce for frescoes and a calmer square than Signoria
  • Optional Pisa half-day if you skipped a fourth city morning

Eating without wasting half the day

Lunch menus near the Duomo are tourist-priced — walk two blocks into Santa Croce or Oltrarno side streets. Book one nicer dinner mid-stay and keep other nights simple: market panini, lampredotto, and a neighbourhood trattoria beat chasing viral restaurants across town.

Tickets, heat, and timing

Uffizi and Accademia timed entry sell out in spring and autumn. Book before you fly. Midday heat June–August makes outdoor piazzas punishing — schedule galleries mornings and church interiors for afternoons.

Self-drive note for longer stays

On a three-day city break you do not need a hire car. Add train-based day trips when you extend to five or seven days — or a one-day Chianti loop with a sober driver who never enters the ZTL. For a tour-operated version of this same geography, use 3 days in Florence with guided tours. Longer independent stays: 5-day Florence self-drive itinerary.
